Happy new year, and welcome back to the first term of 2024. We hope you have had an enjoyable holiday break, with lots of special moments and time with family and friends.
At ATA, we ended 2023 with a flurry of activity. Our team were onboarding new schools and a number of corporate school groups right up until the week prior to Christmas. We also kept a heady pace as we delivered a total of 14 workshops to schools participating in the Australian Teaching Assistant Professional Standards (ATAPS) School Pilot program. Also in December, we wrote to the Ministers for Education in each State and Territory to update them on the progress of ATAPS, and were thrilled to receive a number of very quick and very positive responses requesting a meeting to learn more.
Yesterday, we were invited to meet with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) to offer our feedback on their work developing guidelines to support the optimal deployment of teaching assistants to progress Action 21 of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan (NTWAP): Identify the most effective use of initial teacher education students, teaching assistants and other non-teaching staff. You are also invited to provide your valuable feedback, and we have included more details below.
2024 is promising to be another very productive year with lots of member school activity, a great line up of live web events, 30 more ATAPS pilot workshops, and the publication of ATAPS in Semester 2. We are strapping ourselves in!! Warm regards Stella and Mandy |

| Introducing ATAPS – A performance and professional growth framework
Tuesday 13th February 2024 @ 3:30pm AEST |
The Australian Teaching Assistant Professional Standards (ATAPS) are due to be published in Semester II 2024 and, next month, Stella Liliendal, Director and Co-founder of ATA, will demonstrate how teaching assistants can use the ATAPS framework to reflect on their practice, identify the skills needed to perform their role, and set professional growth goals.
This is an opportunity to become familiar with the framework and get a head start on using ATAPS to support the performance and professional growth of teaching assistants prior to publication. |

ATAPS PILOT PROGRAM UPDATE
|
|
|
|
As part of the Australian Teaching Assistant Professional Standards (ATAPS) Pilot Program, school leaders and teaching assistants from 12 schools and 1 jurisdiction attended the first of 3 workshops in November and December 2023 to help us ensure the Standards are meaningful and relevant to teaching assistants, in all school settings.
Feedback from Workshop 1, where we explored how to use ATAPS to reflect on practice and set goals, has been very positive. The general feeling is that having professional standards is paramount for education support staff in the pursuit of delivering the highest quality education to students, and will contribute to the overall improvement of the educational experience.
“ Having professional learning and standards for our teaching assistants, so we can support them with their professional growth, is really important. I think the standards framework will help build consistent expectations across all schools.” - Leonard Watson, Deputy Principal, Doxa School, Bendigo VIC
School leaders are invited to register their interest in attending a workshop in Semester II 2024, on how to implement the ATAPS framework to support the professional growth of education support staff in schools. Register your interest below, and we will keep you updated. |
